Big Al's Antiques (Alison Whalen)
I have been in the antiques business since the early 80s and have seen many collecting trends come and go, but the one constant which has always remained is the desirability of unique and interesting items of excellent quality. While I do not specialize in any one particular field, I am very partial to vintage European bistro and hotel ware and am always searching for tabletop advertising match strikers, tip trays, cutlery, china, and silver serving pieces bearing the name of a hotel or restaurant. I love these elegant souvenirs of days long gone. Featured in this photo is a beautiful Sheffield pewter meat dome from the Romanov estate.
One of my favorite items that I'm currently offering for sale at Mr. Ryder is an antique Tibetan child's hat in the shape of a cat. The artisan who crafted it paid endearing attention to detail, especially with the ears and the whiskers. It's impossible to look at this sweet little hat without grinning.
I am a violinist and often bring my instrument to the shop on my work days. Now and then a fellow violinist will stop in for an impromptu concert of baroque duets. On quiet days you're likely to catch me practicing scales and etudes.
I am also an artist specializing in whimsical and colorful pet portraits. Greeting cards and giclee prints featuring my artwork are for sale at Mr. Ryder & Company. To see more of my work or to commission a portrait of your pet, please visit my web site at www.bigalsartgallery.com, where you will find my portrait of Mr. Ryder himself, accompanied by his bio.
I feel very fortunate that I am able to combine my profession and my creative endeavors under one roof at Mr. Ryder & Company.
